The district Fahastrogeen, now Barrack Street, has the distinction of being the place from which hurling was first brought to the shores of North America. There is an old song recounting the adventures of the hurlers from this area on the shores of Newfoundland. Fraher Field in Dungarvan hosted Hurling All Ireland's early last century also which highlights it's importance in this region.When the GAA was founded in 1884, Waterford responded by hosting the very first GAA Athletic Championship, in Tramore, Co. Waterford. A famous Waterfordian, Thomas Francis Meagher, the inventor of the Irish flag, encouraged the Irish and Waterford people to embrace our national sport. There have been many Waterford hurlers and hurling heroes of the past from historic figures like John Keane and Philly Grimes to modern day heroes like Ken McGrath, Paul Flynn and Tony Browne.
